It all started with one man’s passion for cars.
Paul Opiela was a chemist living in New Jersey during the 1960s when he became drawn to the design, engineering and personality of Italian cars. In 1969 this passion led to his first car restoration project—an experience that left Paul wanting to provide a better way for fellow enthusiasts to easily access the best restoration parts available. He soon began running ads in car magazines and selling mail-order auto parts from his kitchen, and before long his first mail-order catalog, International Auto Parts, was born.
Although it started out small, IAP quickly found a niche in the Italian-car community. As Paul’s reputation for honesty and great customer service grew, so did the demand for his quality products. Within just a few years Paul had enough orders to become a full-time catalog merchant. In 1975 he moved IAP into its first office space in Mt. Arlington, New Jersey, and three years later moved his family and his business to Charlottesville, Virginia, where they remain today.
After 20 years of established success in the Italian-car market, Paul wanted to expand the company’s horizons to reach drivers of all kinds – from commuters, to drivers concerned with vehicle safety, to anyone wanting to enhance their car’s overall performance and appearance.
In 1991, the first AutoSport Catalog was printed, and over the past two decades we have watched it grow from a print-only catalog to an online-only shopping destination for drivers of all ages and all makes and models.
